Where do you put transmission fluid ?

Where do you put transmission fluid in an 87 cabriolet? I've read a lot but still cant figure out where, i need a detailed explanation for dummies

Hi, currently I'm having problems with my clutch. I will not go into gear at all while the engine is running. I was told that if the transmission is low in oil this can happen. Whether its true or not, I have never put transmission oil in it... Reason being I do not know where!! I've had the car for 6 months and I cant find where to put in.

It is a 1987 volkswagen cabriolet karmann wolfsburg edition. as much detail as humanly possible (as dumb and obvious as it may be) will be much much appreciated.

Sounds like the clutch disc is worn and needs to be replaced (in other words you need a new clucth assembly)
However, some clutch cables can be adjusted:

The clutch cable is likely self-adjusting, however, a means of manual adjust is provided. At the clutch lever [where the clutch cable connets to the transmission] there is a plastic disc attached to the cable. There is a lock nut which keeps the disc from turning during clutch operation. You can loosen that nut and turn the disc in one direction about three rotations then drive the car to see if that "adjustment" helped. If not turn it in the other direction about six turns and rive it again. If no adjustments help, the likely cure is going to be to replace the clutch.

If this is a little too involved, call around to find a transmission shop (or independent VW shop) which will check it out for free or for a very low price.

Engine off, push on the clutch pedal and put it in first and release the hand brake.

Start the engine.

Does it feel like the car wants to move already?

If no, slowly release the clutch pedal and monitor when the vehicle starts to move.

If the car starts to move while the clutch pedal is just an inch off of the floor, then you might have a collapsed pressure plate or a broken clutch
cable "tube" at the pedal cluster.

Just read your other thread (try to stick to only creating ONE post for each problem).

If you can put it in gear with the engine OFF, but when you try to start it the engine / car jumps (with clutch pedal to the floor), then your clutch
is not disengaged... you said you replaced the clutch, then you need to look at the links I provided in the other topic you have open.

Thank you for your replies. The problem to the gear was water in the clutch. It dried and went back to normal.

THOMAS, thank you for reading and following all my posts. If you take a look at the title of the question and the body of it, this IS a different topic. I still do not know where to put transmission fluid in. I have never put transmission oil in it... Reason being I do not know where!! I've had the car for 6 months and I cant find where to put in.
