When to change brake pads, currently at 4mm

I went for a oil change at my dealership and they told me that my rear pads are 4 and 3mm and quoted me $375.00 for pads/rotors.

I decided to go to a local shop "well known/popular family business. have also been here before" and they quoted me $225.00. I then received a call and said that my brakes are fine. He confirmed the 4mm and said they still have "meat" on them and the rotors look fine.. I wouldn't need any repairs..

When should I have the pads replaced and how long do you think a single mm last?

I'm also hearing some slight squeaking. I was surprised that he didn't suggest new pads. lol

Yes the brake pads are still within specs, but barely. They due only have a single mm until they need to be replaced. How long will it last? Well it depends on how often you drive the vehicle, how hard you drive the vehicle, do you drive it on flat ground, or up in the mountains. There really is no set answer here. If you are hearing the "squeak" of yhe warning bar, then it should be time for replacement. That is what it is there for.
