what could be wrong with my car

when i put the truck into gear, drive/reverse it stalls/shuts off. It cranks up without any problems and runs if it is in park. A the one mechanic shop i was told the transmission was bad and another says it sounds like another problem.

What is the idling speed?
Are you able to keep the engine from stalling if the engine rpm is increased to 1000 rpm when reverse is engaged?
Only further diagnostics would be able to tell you what is wrong.
