Hello, sorry to hear of your issue, the electronic power steering has a few different components that need to be checked. There's the electric motor, the wiring harness, sensors, and a module (computer) that controls and reads inputs. You can do a visual inspection for any lose connections. Besides that, it will require testing for certain voltage signals and proper grounds. As soon as the system sees any fault it shuts down and sets the light for safety purposes. It's not a system you want to fail at 70 mph down the highway. So if you're unsure about testing then I would recommend taking it to a qualified technician.
