I don't feel either would do a good job. Before waxing, you want all road dirt, wax, and oily films removed from the paint. WD40 would not remove any oily substances.
As far as car wash, it is designed to clean without stripping wax.
When I wax my vehicles, I use a product manufactured by Griots. They make a large line of products for the vehicle's exterior.
If you look at the attached pic, that is what I use before waxing. I have a spray bottle of it and simply spray it on and wipe off the dirt, wax, and anything that would prevent a good adhesion between the wax and paint.
I am not trying to sell a product and neither this site nor I have an interest in the Griots company. I don't want you to think I'm getting a kickback. LOL It's just a product I've used and been happy with.
