When the car overheated could it have done damage to the water pump causing it to go out three months later?

Hi. I need to know if these two things can be connected. My vehicle overheated when the cap was left off the radiator coolant bottle after having a service. I took it back to the garage and they had a look at it and said it was all okay, no damage done. Then three months later the water pump broke the bearings and gone. When the car overheated could it of done damage to water pump and then it broke three months later?

Hi,

Anything is possible, but if it was the result of overheating, chances are it wasn't the cause. If the system was fully emptied of coolant, it could have damaged the bearing in the pump. The bearing is lubricated by coolant. However, I feel that would have been evident shortly after the incident.

I hope this helps. Let me know if you have other questions.

Take care,

Joe

Thanks for your reply, Joe. No other questions, just wanted to know if I were being lied to, as the garage said there's no way the two could possibly be linked.
