I got my water pump and timing belt changed on 28/12/16 and heard a noise coming from my car which I thought was a bushing under the gear box. Turns out it was the water pump I have done 30,000 km since.
What would cause this?

Good evening.

There is a bearing in the water pump that wears out and will make a growling noise when it has failed.

But surely there must be some reason for it going so quickly? Only done over a year.

If it was a rebuilt pump, it would explain it.

Otherwise whoever installed the timing belt adjusted the tension too tight and it caused the bearing to fail.

Would it not be the manufactures fault? Was bought new. And could there by any other reason?

As I stated, if it was installed with incorrect tension, that would cause it. That would fall back on the person who installed it, not the manufacturer.
If it is new, then it has a lifetime warranty on the part.
If it was rebuilt, it has a one year.
