In the next couple of weeks I am going to be driving from Pennsylvania to Tennessee to visit my daughter. I have heard a lot of stories about the water pump on these models being a weak point. Should I replace the water pump prior to my trip? I do not believe it has ever been changed.

Take it to a BMW dealer and have them scan the data on the pump. They can actually see the amp draw and other issues relating to the pump. They can also give you an idea of other problems as the factory scan tool they use can access much more than a generic tool will.

The pump is not that difficult to change out but it is not cheap so I would not do it just because it might be bad.
