Just want to know if the water pump goes will the head need replacing? The belt had about ten teeth missing but did not snap. It is in a garage at the moment and they are saying they have changed the head because one of the rods was bent.

Good evening.

You have what is called an interference engine. This means that when the timing belt fails and the engine timing is off, the pistons will hit the valves and damage to the valves is the result.

This is why it needs to be replaced. There is valve damage from the timing belt failure.

The head has to be removed and inspected for the valves. They can repair the head rather than just replacing it but that is up to the shop.

Thanks Roy. The water pump failed causing the belt to lose teeth. Would it not be easier changing the valves rather than the head?

You have to remove the head to access the valves. It is up to the shop as to whether they will do a valve job or replace the head. I always did a valve job as it is cheaper than replacing the head.

Yeah I thought that they had done the job but they are saying it is not running right. They have done the water pump chain and belts now head seems a bit drastic.I would have just done the valves, lol. Thank for your advice.

Hi Roy, I was talking to you the other day about the Ford Fiesta with water pump problems all work has been done but the car will not pull. What could be the problem be? Put it in gear and it just will not pull you out of bed.

Sounds like the timing is not correct. Whoever replaced the head or the chain needs to verify the marks. It sounds like the timing is retarded.

Oh, great. Nothing worse than an inexperienced tech doing a major repair.
