Obviously this is not a good thing but there are a number of possible causes. Here is a guide that will walk you through the most of them:

However, since you just bought the vehicle, it will be a good idea to run a compression check even if you find out this issue is being caused by something other than a head gasket. This is just a baseline of what the engine's health is and making sure it is okay is a good thing to know.
