The sensor in the coolant reservoir is for coolant level, not temperature. If the temperature light is coming on it suggests you either need to bleed the cooling system as it has air trapped in it or the wiring to the temperature sensor has an issue. The ECT is in the pipe behind the left hand cylinder head.
Bleeding process-
Open bleeder screw (approximately two turns ) in large coolant pipe, near engine coolant temperature sensor.
Add coolant to expansion tank.
Close bleeder screws when coolant starts to run out.
Fill expansion tank until level reaches top edge, then install cap on expansion tank.
Run engine at idle until coolant fan has switched on at least once.
Increase engine speed to 2000 rpm for approximately thirty seconds.
Stop engine (switch ignition off), and check coolant level in expansion tank.
Top up to "Max" mark if necessary.
