Warning light indicates overheating how can I fix it?

The engine can overheat due a verity of reasons.
It could be due to having low coolant, a stuck closed thermostat, bad radiator, faulty water pump, contaminated coolant or having blockage in the cooling system. It can also overheat due to inoperative cooling fans.

One of the most common overheating reason is a stuck closed thermostat. When a thermostat fails at the closed position it prevents coolant from flowing thru the radiator to cool down, this causes the engine to overheat. Typically with a stuck closed thermostat you will have noticeable temperature difference between the upper and lower radiator hose.


Another possibility is a faulty water pump. When a water pump fails it is unable to circulate coolant which leads to overheating.


Do you know if the cooling fans are operational?
Inoperative cooling fan will lead to overheated engine. The cooling fans might not work due to a bad fan relay. It can also be due to bad wiring or malfunctioning fan motor.
Checking the relay should be the first step.

Keep in mind that a faulty temperature sensor will also prevent the fan from turning on.
