Our 2004 xc90 volvo recently having extremely slow acceleration from dead stop to about 30 mph no matter how far you pressed on the gas. Check Transmission light came on. Dealer wants $11,000 to fix transmission (and replace a few tires). Took it to outside guys but they are saying that there are codes that only volvo has that will let them put new transmission in and allow it to interact with the engine properly. Is this true that volvo has it set up that only they can fix the car and no-one else can because of some "secret" codes that link the trans to the engine? What is the story? Thank you for your time

Look for another shop. There is no secret code out there to replace the transmission. But what they do need is the proper equipement to access the transmission control module to reset the oil counter and reset the transmission control module adaptations. Generic scanners will not do that.
