what is involved for a mechanic to flush and fill the transmission? Does the fluid need to be sythetic? Thank you

Yes the oil is synthetic and it would be better if you actually bought the oil from Volvo. If you are doing a drain and fill only then all you need to do is remove the drain plug on the botom of the transmission and fill it back up through the dipstick tube. DO NOT REMOVE THE PLUG ON TOP OF THE TRANSMISSION TO FILL BECAUSE IT LOOKS EASIER TO GET AT THEN THE DIPSTICK TUBE!!!! You remove that plug on top then say bye bye to third gear.
