My Volvo needs a new heater core. I have had 3 cores replaced in various makes of cars in the past and the cost has always been around $1000. This seems like alot to invest for a higher mileage car. I am wondering if I could save by getting a used heater core. If labor represents most of the cost the, savings from buying used might not be worth it. I would appreciate your advice!

HI there,

Thank you for the donation,

Fitting a used heater core is asking for trouble, firstly you have no idea as to the age of the core, if it was always used with the correct coolant and how long it has been dry as this will accelerate any corrosion with in the core, you may only get a few months out of it and be up for the labour and a core again, a genuine core is around $350. And only about 2 Hrs to fit, so I would look at a good quality after market core and have it installed.
