1999 Volvo V70 burning a lot of oil

The car drives great. no smoke noted, no oil leaking on ground. Occassionally will smell little burning oil. With in 3000 mi oil change, the oil will read as empty on oil stick. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Perform a compression test to check piston rings, if OK then other possibility is valve stem seals.
