1998 Volvo V70 Cars shakes when accelerating

Check engine light comes on and starts flashing when accelerating on the highway. Car begins to vibrate..... seems to be working way too hard. Any insight would be appreciated.....

Your vehicle is misfiring and if you keep driving it like that you will damage the cataytic converter. Have it scanned for codes to see which cylinder is misfiring. Usually it will be a bad coil causing the misfire but also worn out spark plugs or none Volvo spark plugs will cause the misfire.
