iv cleaned the fuel filter and checked the plugs. no engine managment light on./ when ticking over a slight miss in the engine

If you are having an idle issue, then you may want to call Volvo first to see if your throttle is still covered under the 10 year/200k mile extended warranty. Of coarse they will need to diagnose your vehicle first to see if the throttle is faulty.
