I just purchased a 2006 Volvo S40 5 cylinder....on cold start up the motor revs to abt 2500 and stays there for abt 30-45 seconds before "calming down" to normal idle....my question is, is this a normal thing for Volvo's?

When cold it is normal since it is trying to reach operating temperature by raising the idle. It is like the choke system used on carburated engines but now the computer takes care of that.
