2002 Volvo s40 Turn Signal Quit

Neither turn signal works suddenly. Checked fuses, all are fine. Steering column housing seems a bit loose, (will tighten tonight) but any ideas on what could be the cause?

If the column is lose, that could be the problem (chaffed wiring) Do the hazards work?
