I saw that a V40 2000 Volvo ownder had the same issue I've recently experienced - the transmission stalls/skips around 50mph and the check engine light flashes a few times and then goes off. I was just wondering if this is a defect of the model year and what was done to correct the problem before I take it into the dealership for repair. Of note, many of the similar issues that S40/V40 2000 owners experience (i.E. Turn signals short when hazard light's engaged, O2 sensor is defective and subject to manufacturer recall, etc) has happened with my particular car.

A flashing check engine light indicates you have a severe misfire which can damage the catalytic converter so it flashes to warn you that you need to pull over and have it checkd out. Inspect the 2 coils for splits on the side. If they are replace both coils. Also what kind of spark plugs do you have? If they are not Volvo plugs I suggest you replace them with Volvo plugs. Any other brands and it will misfire. If all is good then the ignition coil harness could be bad as well. There is a capcitor inside that harness that goes bad from time to time but that is rare? If all that is good then further diagnosis needs to be done for a possible mechanical failure.
