Electrical problem
1997 Volvo 850 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual

My wife drives a 97 volvo 850. She took it to get inspected the other day and was told by the mechanic that one of the car's problems is that it "starts in gear with the clutch out." I was under the impression that this car is supposed to start in gear if you leave the clutch out and turn the key while the car is in gear. Am I mistaken? Did this car come equipped with a clutch safety switch? If it did I can't find reference to it anywhere.

You are correct. Volvo, the beacon of safety in a world of peril, did not put clutch safety switches in their cars until 1998 starting with the S/V70.
