Air Conditioning problem
1997 Volvo 850 Four Wheel Drive Automatic 150000 miles

My air compressor goes in and out repeatedly very quickly making a loud engaging noise as it does this making the car lunge if in motion. IF you turn the air off, it runs fine. It also does this, but not as bad if the defroster is turned on. Is my compressor shot or could it be a fuse or some other problem.

Sounds like the compressor is on its way out

IT ACTUALLY SOUNDS LIKE THE FREON LEVEL MAY BE LOW. THE ENGAGEMENT OF THE COMPRESSOR CYCLING ON AND OFF FREQUENTLY, THAT IS NORMALLY AN INDICATION THAT THE SYSTEM NEEDS A RECHARGE. IF YOU TURN ON THE DEFROSTER, THE A/C TURNS ON, WHICH WOULD ALSO CREATE THE SAME CONDITION.
