1989 Volvo 760 transmission replacement

Transmission problem
1989 Volvo 760 Engine Size unknown Wheel Drive Type unknown Automatic 174,00 miles

I am wondering if it is worth putting in a new transmission on this car. The transmission went out while i was on the freeway. I drove off the freeway with the car smoking. The car was towed to a transmission shop and they said it would be $1000 for a new transmission. I am wondering what else gets damages when a transmission goes out. what would you reccommend?

At this point, being that it's a 1989...the thousand is a good downpayment on a new car...
