Ever since I have had my volvo (a year ago) it would go through phases where I would turn it on and it would just die right after. I read this is somewhat common amongst 740's. And no one really gets it. Recently it has been doing it more often, or it will turn over and I can hear the engine going up and down, up and down. I replaced the belt that connects to the alternator and battery because it somehow actually managed to flip over. This has made it better, but I can still hear it struggle sometimes. Could it be an alternator, or battery possibly?

It has only stopped once while I was driving, and it was while I was stopped at a light. All of my lights stayed on, it just seemed to die. I finally got it turned back on but when I began to drive it was jerking in a manner like I was running out of gas, it would just pick up and then struggle, then it died. However, every other time it has been when I turn it on. It turns over just fine, but then I can hear the engine rev up and down a few times until it just dies. Everytime this happens, all of my lights stay on though.

IS THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON? SOUNDS LIKE THERE MIGHT MULTIPLE ISSUES. FIRST, I WOULD START BY CHECKING THE THROTTLE HOUSING FOR BUILD-UP AND POSSIBLE CLEANING. SECOND, CHECK THE SPARK PLUGS/WIRES, POSSIBLE MISFIRE. THIRD, CHECK THE FUEL INJECTION RELAY AND RADIO SUPPRESSION RELAY, IF THEY ARE ORIGINAL, THEN THEY SHOULD BE REPLACED. IN OTHER WORDS, FIRST COVER THE BASICS AND THEN GO FROM THERE.
