1991 Volvo 240 clank in engine

my 1991 volvo wagon just started making a rattle/knock noise in the engine. it sounds like there is a lug nut being tossed around inside the engine. i'd like to drive it to the garage but don't know if it will make it. doesn't seem to have bothered how it drives but the noise is pretty bad.

ideas? poss. diagnosis?

Tow it in to the shop just to be on the safe side.
