After years of adequate service, my defroster has stopped functioning. The fan is okay, and it still heats, but it justs puts out a tiny bit of air onto the windshield and the windshield frosts up terribly.

I would gather that the defrost is run by a vacuum switch. Check for a cracked or leaky hose that is not producing enough suction to open and close the valve that directs the air to the windshield.
