I am on my third fuel pump in 2 years. One lasted 1.5 yrs (and was expensive!). Then I tried one I picked off a vanagon at the junk yard - it lasted one week. I'm told the one I had installed new was probably old and dried out from and sitting on a shelf for years.

what is the best one to buy? From a vanagon website they are about $150. Ebay/amazon is about $50 - but will the cheaper one just die in a few years again?

it seems easy to install since it is so accessible - any advice for me doing this myself?

First of all the Vanagon fuel pump is a vane style pump, there is no way it could be "old and dried out from and sitting on a shelf for years" you have not mentioned in all theses fuel pump replacement that you ever replace the fuel filter, or that the fuel filter plugged or that the fuel was contaminated.I believe you're having problems with fuel pumps because 90% of Vanagons accumulate lots of water in the fuel tank and it turns into rust, and of course ruins your Pump. Pull the fuel filter off dumping inside a glass jar and let me know what you see.
