Engine Mechanical problem
2003 Volkswagen TDI 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive 90000 miles

I recently put a new battery in my car...I had'nt used it in about 8 months, after installing it and starting it, i noticed the battery light was on. It had never come on before. Can just sitting without being used cause the alternator to die? or might it be a belt or just something minor?

Hi there,

If the belt is in good order and tight, this just may be what is called sticky brushes, there are 2 carbon brushes in the alternator that can stick and cause this problem if the alt has not been used for some time, some times a good run can dislodge them , otherwise a mechanic can remove the brush block and clean them manually.
