I am a little confused you say; "ive put ten pound of petrol in it" petrol is diesel unless you're running some kind of biofuel? and then you top it off you say" but then filled it up with diesel" have you checked you glow plug system? you may have one burned out that will cause a hard start.

Petrol is not diesel it is gasoline a very different type of fuel.

Your fuel system will likely need to be flushed of petrol and filled with diesel. forums.tdiclub.com has methods to resolve this issue.
