about 2 weeks ago my reversing lights failed to operate. I 've checked the bulbs and they are ok. Now I found out this weekend my brake lights have failed. I am not sure if they are connected in anyway. My main question is I am aware there is a box with a piston rod which touches the brake pedal, but without being able to see properly, I can only feel and nothing seems wrong. Can you give any advise.

First of all the backup light switch is located on the transmission, directly underneath the master cylinder, it is the only plug that go's into the transmission, it will have four to six wires, now about your brake lights, you cannot diagnose an electrical switch by "I can only feel and nothing seems wrong" you are going to have to check the break light switch with a meter or a test light.
