1990 Volkswagen Rabbit Front Wheel Drive Automatic 104000 miles

I am the proud second owner of this vehicle. When turning left or right there is a loud clunk and a vibration that coincides with it. In the old days this would be a broken universal joint in the steering column. What are these 1990s made of? Bill H

your diagnosis is correct, the sound you're hearing is your front axles, today they are called CV joints (Centrifugal Velocity joints), in other words like you stated "In the old days this would be a broken universal joint" the axles are a little difficult to replace, if you want to attempt it, I will help you, let me know
