My 89 Cabriolet will not start when it is hot. There is a clicking noise that is coming from somewhere under the hood, but not from the starter, when the engine is hot. When it cools off, it starts fine every time. If I have to drive it for a few miles and cut it off, it will not start again until I let it cool off.

The car seems to be running a little warmer then normal as well.

It is loosing water somewhere. I have to add water once a week, but I do not see any leaks.

The engine is starting to "lope" while it is idling.

I hope this is enough info to work with.

From the sound of things you have more than one malfunction,

#1 If it won't start when hot you could have a bad solenoid or starter, on the automatic it is on the back side of the engine below the exhaust.

#2 The lope that you are getting at idle sounds like a vacuum leak, this could also cause the engine to run too lean causing a higher operating temperature.

#3 water consumption could be caused by a blown head gasket, however I have seen the plug on the bottom of the water inlet leak, its not a lot and only when the car is running. It is just an O-ring, not difficult to change. If the engine has been overheated at any time I would do a compression check to make sure the head gasket is good, I would also change the thermostat as it is common for them to fall apart and not being able to open.
