Engine Performance problem
1988 Volkswagen Rabbit 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual 100k+ miles

Engine ran great but noticed engine would occasionally loose power when shiftiing, if I pushed in the clutch and reved the engine it would seem to blow out. Problem has gotten progressively worse and now it will start and idle fine, but when any load is put on engine it bogs down with a muffled sound and eventually cuts out. Lettiing it sit for a few minutes seems to help, but it quickly begins again. I put some fuel system cleaner in and did not help, where should I start looking?

Go here and checkout our video.
You can rent the test gauge at Autozone.
Your system won't look like this one, but the idea is the same, test fuel pressure and check for vacuum leaks. Get a can of spray gumout, spray the vac lines and maniflod area, when the idle changes, youve found the leak! You want the engine running and spray on the outside but do direct the stream onto the hoses, if it is a vacuum leak, the engine idle will change speed, then you have detected a leak, repair the vacuum leak and see how it runs!
