I have a 1983 VW Rabbit which runs very rough on cold starts....reminds me of a washing machine running out of balance....this goes on for the first 30 seconds to a minute depending on how cold it is. After that, it purrs like a kitten. I am inclined to think it's the cold start valve but am not sure.

Check the cold start injector and also test the coolant temperature sensor

When you refer to the "cold start injector", is that different from a "cold start valve"?

Its the same smell and purpose-initial fuel demand before the rest of the injector/s comes in play
