My brake pads are thin. My local mechanic says $175 to replace them. Volkswagen says the rotors must always be replaced with the pads, cost $1000. Should I take a chance with the cheaper alternative?

Only relace the rotors if they are badly warped or have met min thickness. As far as replacing the pads, it is easy to do. Here are the directions. You could do it yourself.

If the rotors are bad, you can get aftermarket ones cheap.

If you have any mechanical ability and a few tools, do it yourself. They are crazy charging 1000.00 for this job. I would do them the rest of my life if I could make that kind of money.

Let me know if you have questions.
