2002 Volkswagen Passat strong gas smell

I filled my car with gas this evening and parked after driving for about an hour. I went back outside to my car later and smelled gas outside. Opened the door and there was a overpowering smell of gas inside. No evidence of gas on the ground behind car. could not see in front of car
