2000 Volkswagen Passat crankshaft pulley replacement

2000 Volkswagen Passat

i need to replace my crankshaft pulley and bolt. the bolt looks as though it has been grinded off at the end that attaches to the car. what does it attach to? and what could cause this to happen.

Hi there,

Are you referring to the threaded section of the bolt that screws into the crank shaft end? If so and it is badly damaged, this would have been caused by it being cross threaded when last installed and being done up with an impact gun, this will tear the thread and destroy the bolt and do damage to the crank shaft internal thread.
