Transmission problem
1996 Volkswagen Passat 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Manual

Just recently, first gear went out in my VW. I would like to know if it is possible to just replace this gear, or would it be better to replace the entire transmission. If replacing the gear is better, could you please direct me to the best place to purchase this part seeing how have not been able to find it.

It depends on the damage to the first gear and without stripping the trans, it is not possible to know which parts needs replacement.

If you can get a used trans, I believe that would be a faster solution.
