Vacuum cleaner sound

I have a 1999 VW Passat V6. Sat. I got to work and when I turned off the engine and I could hear a vacuum cleaner sound. I have never heard any kind of fan after turning off my car. I checked to see if it was overheated, but it wasn't. I checked the car two hour later and it was still running! Then it started turning on, running for 10 seconds to 5 five min. Needlesss to say, I woke up with a dead battery. My mechanic is good ole country boy and just loves to see pulling up to his garage. The nearest dealership is 150 miles away and costs way too much. He determined it's not the main cooling fan and did find a hose that had suction like a vacuum. Could you give me any info on this problem? I would much appreciate.

Wow this is a good question. U say vacuum noise with out hearing the noise this is hard but hear are some ideas when it is happening check the secondary air pump if it is running, its located lower left of engine compartment. 2nd the secondary coolant pump could be the noise which is also located in the lower left the engine compartment. Check those and good luck hopefully this will help you out.

There is usually a fan switch screwed into the radiator that turns the fan off and on depending on the coolant temperature. When the fan keeps running forever, it's usually this switch that has gone bad. Easy to check if you can spot the switch. Pull off the two wires(pull off the wire connectors, that is), the fan should stop. If you touch the two wires one to the other, the fan should go on. You've just bypassed the fan switch. Pull the wires apart and the fan should go off. Be careful as one of the wires is hot (12v) and will short out if you let it touch bare metal on the body of the car.
