My 95 VW Cabrio @ 120,000 miles, is making squeaking & knocking sounds. The repair shop says it needs to have the timing belt, water pump, drive & v belts changed. For a cost of $1300 for parts and labor. Does that sound right?

A brand new water pump does cost quite a bit. The belts should have been replaced around 50k miles ago. Well I just hope you get out of this position. It does sound pretty accurate more-or-less.

Good year timing belts can last 75K miles even though I wait until 80K miles. If its a metal squeek its your timing belt pulley. I once replaced the water pump and the stupid squeek was still there. Its possible to inject some oil into the bearing with a shringe needle when the noise changes then you know but you need a belt anyway for your next bearing or a bearing for your new belt. Only replace the water pump when leaking or siezed. Where did you go Arco? Are your Vbelts ripping up or missing pieces.
