Hi, I have a VW Passat Wagon GL, 1992, 87,400miles (automatic transmission). Over the past 3-5K miles it has started to shake while the car is in gear but I have the brake on (for example at a light/stop sign). Once I accelerate the car works great and the shaking is minimized. It addition there is a metal rattle when the car is shaking. Over the past week, the symptoms have been joined by black smoke coming out the tailpipe when at a stop (but in gear).

All of this stops when in Neutral or Park, however sometimes when I turn off the key/motor, the car seems to run on for 1-2secs. Doesn't happen every time, but definitely occurs.

Any clue on what this is and how to fix?

Try cleaning or rewplacing the Idle air controller, it's a small part bolted to the sie of the throttle body, the black smoke is because the car is running too rich, too much gas! Is the check engine light on?
You may have an 02 or MAF sensor problem too! When was the last tune up?

Check engine light is not on. What is an O2 or MAF sensor problem? Last tune up was about 5-6 months ago

Thanks for the help
