Use an oil pressure gauge stick it where the oil sending unit is. Read pressure. Could be an oil pump,if its sounds like a thudding/thumping sounds its coming from the engine bearings-excessive clearance it will loose pressure.
Sounds like a rebuild is needed if the pump check outs.
