Hi, I have a 1990 Volkswagen Jetta GL, 1.8L 405,000kms. It has a hand crank moon roof and when I go to crank it open nohing happens, the handle just spins. Is there some sort of cog that may be stripped? I just want to know what could be the problem before I go tearing the roof apart. Help is greatly appriciated.

Cody.

First look to see if the handle spline is stripped, if so replace the handle, if not you will need to inspect the regulator that controls the roof hatch and replace or repair as needed.

Do I have to take the whole roof liner off in order to check the spline? Or does just the handle come off?

Just the handle, and yes you must remove the headliner to service the moon roof
