I can't seem to find where to check the transmission fluid level on the 1996 Golf my daugter just purchsed. Would you be able to tell me where to check; I can't seem to locate any dipstick. I do see a large access hole on top of the transmission housing - and it's open which I don't think is good.

On manual transmissions, it's a plug on the side of the gearbox, fill to bottom of the hole. Go to VW parts counter and get the cover for that hole!
