Inherited VW

I inherited a 1978 super beetle from my F-I-L. It has been sitting for 3+ years. What steps should be taken to bring this back to running condition? It currently has a dead battery (obviously).

what a wonderful inheritance...i wish more of my relatives had beetles.
anyway, first, get a new battery of course...
drain any fuel from the tank and put some fresh in,
along with some type of fuel system cleaner...old gas will eventually turn to varnish.
make sure your fuses are good, and check all around the inside and outside of the car for anything that should not be there....especially in the engine compartment...check behind the fan shroud and make sure there's nothing stuck in there.
change the oil!!! cannot stress this enough...
