1999 VW Jetta IV, 2.0 AEG, 4-sp auto trans, 113K miles. Just started overheating two days ago says my daughter. No previous coolant issues. Just drained coolant and replaced thermostat, then refilled. Have following sx's: lower radiator hose from thermostat is cold, upper hose is hot; heater is cold; refill reservoir is hot; when oil fill cap is removed there is no white residue, but there appears to be exhaust/air blowing out--never noticed that before. No white smoke out tailpipe either. Does this point to head gasket being blown?

18mm combo wrench, generously lubricate all threads with WD-40 oil, loosen all nuts first. Then hold the nut with wrench in place while turning the (usually 8mm, sometimes inverted star) protruding shaft in towards the nut.

The replacements have a place to use a wrench for holding in the middle of the shaft while tightening the new nuts.
