Car began shuddering intermittently 300 miles into a 400 mile trip. I stopped at a gas station to investigate and fill my gas tank and noticed that the engine was sputtering like a Harley idling at the curb. I could barely inch the car into a parking spot after filling the tank, so I called AAA roadside assistance. The tow truck driver noticed that my distributor cap was loose- one of the clamps was undone. Car was delivered to a VW dealership – service dept said that the distributor was fine, but the cap & rotor and plug wires (showing infinite resistance) needed to be replaced – inside the distributor cap was a ½ inch circular cracked depression.
4 questions: 1.) I had my clutch replaced 3 days before this happened, so is it possible that the cap or one of the clamps holding it in place was knocked loose during that repair? 2.) Why would a distributor cap come undone on its own? 3.) Would the loose cap cause the SP wires to go bad? 4.) Dist cap & wires both had been replaced 3 times in 3 years with arcing evident in cap and infinite resistance in wires – bad parts, bad luck, or something else? Thank you

1- Possible, but not real likely
2-Is it held down with spring clips or screws? The
spring style clips can be bent, causing them not to
work properly.
3-Not unless the wires are the style that poke
through the cap, then they could be damaged
4-What brand wires are you buying? I would only use
VW wires

Running ok now?
