Car sounds rough when accelerating. HELP!

Hi, I drive a '00 Jetta GLS and recently everytime I accelerate at 3RPMs or more it sounds really rough.

I'll accelerate then before I am about to go to 3RPMs I switch gears and the process repeats.

Any information would be really appreciated!

Sounds rough as in something rattling? Engine pinging? Does it accelerate beyond 3000 despite the noise?

It can accelerate past 3RPMs. I just don't want to push it to hard, because I'm afraid of making it worse.

There's no rattling or pinging. It just sounds rough as in it's grinding real hard against something else.
I don't know if it could mean I need an oil change or change my transmission fluid.
