car hiccups

I have an audiA3 1996. It hiccups while driving in any gear, seems worse in city driving. Any ideas?

You could try and clean the mass air flow sensor , this could be the cause of the problem. its located on the air intake. This might not sort the problem but its a good place to start.It sorted my car out , it was acting simalerly in low gears.
